“Perder por conocer no es perder. What this translates roughly to, is ‘losing for knowledge is not losing’. This is something that my father has always said to my brother and I. He has such a positive outlook on everything, no matter the circumstances. When things don’t go as planned for me, I always think about my father and this saying to remind myself that no matter what, there was a lesson learned. With that perspective, it makes it easier for me to move forward when things don’t go as I had hoped.”

“Cuando se cierra una puerta, se abre una ventana. When a door closes, a window opens. My parents spoke little English, and we lived in a tough but close community. If I wanted to succeed, I needed to be determined.
